You've probably noticed that the style of art is different in my different books. That's because I always try to match the style of art to the tone of the story. Moishe's Miracle is written in the style of a traditional Eastern European folktale, so the art is inspired by great Russian paintings. Oh Ducky! is a zany romp, so the art is inspired by Looney Tunes style cartooning, with a lively pen line inspired by Rembrandt's reed pen drawings. He Came With the Couch is told in the voice of the little girl, Sophie, so the art needed to have warmth, (provided by the richness of oils), mixed with childlike simplicity (provided by pencil line work). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Making memories My Mom and Dad read to me. I can vividly remember sitting on their laps with Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel, Harry the Dirty Dog, Madeline and the Bad Hat, Bartholomew and the Oobleck, Are You My Mother?, and many, many others. Those images and stories are with me for life.
Now I have four children of my own. Some of our favorite read-alouds have been Sam the Minuteman, Floss, all the Frog and Toad books, I Am a Bunny, Caps for Sale, and all the George and Martha stories.
When a child falls in love with a book, something important and lasting is happening. Now as a grown up, I get to create books that may become part of someone else's lifelong memories. What a job!
