I chose to read the book Moishe’s Miracle

My G.L.I: Grade Two Reading Process: Concepts of Print, Comprehension Strategies, and Self-Monitoring Strategies.

Indicator: #5: Create and use graphic organizers (worksheets, webs, etc.) to demonstrate comprehension.

Rough Sketch by David Slonim from Moishe's Miracle

Activity: After reading Moishe’s Miracle and discussing the different characters within the story and what they were like, taken from descriptions in the story and information from the text, students were given a worksheet to fill out. The worksheet had each of the main characters’ names on it and lines to the right of the space for their names, where they used information from the pictures and text to describe the characters. This was a good activity to do because the characters in the book are so strong and their personalities are reflected so well in the pictures. After filling out the worksheet/handout, students were given a piece of white paper to draw a picture of the character(s) of their choice, using descriptions from the text.

My students really seemed to enjoy the activity! They remembered exactly what the characters were like from the reading and were able to use the written descriptions they wrote down on the paper to draw their pictures. They helped brainstorm – enthusiastically – different characteristics and description words about each character, and then used these ideas to construct their worksheets and pictures, doing a great job! They seemed interested in the characters and involved in both the story and the activity afterwards. Their ideas proved that they paid attention and were excited to get their ideas down on paper!
