Materials needed:

                                    Oh, Ducky!

                                    shoebox or other small box

                                    construction paper

                                    various materials

                                    paper and pencil

                                    glue

Activity:

Introduce the book during a read aloud.  Have the students make a diorama creating their favorite scene from the story.  After creating the scene, write a short paragraph describing the scene.   Paragraph should be written legibly and show proper spacing between letters, words, and sentences.  Students should spell unknown words by saying them slowly and writing all sounds heard.  Students will then glue their paragraph to the back of their diorama.

Reaction of students:

The students loved the story of Mr. Peters and his crazy chocolate candy making gadget.  Overall, the students’ favorite scene was when Mr. Peters makes his heroic swim through the shark-infested chocolate waters and saves Ducky.  The students enjoyed making the diorama.  They would have liked to make their own, but were eager to supply ideals and suggestions for the collaborative example.  The students willingly wrote their short paragraph about their favorite scene.  Their only struggle with the writing assignment was condensing their detailed version of their favorite scene into just a few sentences.
