David Slonim Lesson & Activity

*I will read He Came with the Couch, written and illustrated by David Slonim, to the class as a read aloud.

GRADE LEVEL INDICATOR FOR LESSON

*Grade 3: Writing Applications: “Write responses to novels, stories and poems that demonstrate an understanding of the text and support judgments with specific references to the text.

MATERIALS NEEDED

*BOOK: He Came with the Couch

*white 8 ˝ x 10 pieces of paper

*lined paper to write message to Mr. Slonim

*camera to take picture of the class working on the project

*coloring materials to use for the illustrations (markers, colored pencils, crayons)

ACTIVITY

*After we are finished, I will ask the children what they thought of the story.  We will do this while still sitting on the carpet unless the children show that they need to sit in their desks to handle the fun activity.  We will then together write a short message to Mr. Slonim, responding to his book and showing our understanding of the story.  This message will go in the beginning of the book.  At that point, each child will be given a blank paper to draw the creature from the story and use him in different school settings.  They will write “He came with the…” on the bottom of the page in nice, legible handwriting.  After all the students are finished with their illustrations, I will take the pictures to laminate them and create a nice class book.  I also plan to take a picture of the class while holding the book to place on the response message to Mr. Slonim.

Our Class response to the book:

He Came with the Couch

By: David Slonim

We like this book because the character saved Sophie with the couch.  We also liked the patterns and the pictures in the story.  We think you should write a new book and have the two characters get married and have a baby.  The baby character should come with a luv-seat.
